Federer Advances To Fifth Straight Final
by Joe McDonald | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief | Sunday, September 7, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – It was a different Roger Federer at the Open this year. Gone were the days of dominance with the Swiss master looking like he lost a step. Yet, there he was winning in the Open Semifinals over and in the first set, the old Federer dominated third seeded Novak Djokovic to an easy 6-3 win. “I hit winners all the way through,” said the second seeded Federer . “It was important, you know, to stay grounded, you know, because I knew that tough times were going to arrive, and that's exactly happened in the second set. You don't hit your first serves like maybe you do usually, or the way I was hitting them in the first set. I knew I was always going to get in trouble against such a good player like Novak.”

Baby Bums Fall Short of Playoff Bid in 5-3 Extra-Inning Loss
by Joe McDonald | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief | Saturday, September 6, 2008
BROOKLYN, NY - The Brooklyn Cyclones playoff run came up about 20 feet too short on Friday, after a 5-3 extra-inning nail-biting loss to the Aberdeen Ironbirds. With Kirk Nieuwenhuis, their best hitter all season at the plate in the bottom of the tenth, an absolute bomb off the third round pick's bat was torn from the sky courtesy of Hurricane Hanna-inspired winds, right into Aberdeen outfielder Jacob Julius's glove in right center field. Seconds later, the last Fireworks show of the summer at Coney Island started, symbolizing a beautiful season that in the end, just wasn't meant to be. A half inning afterwards, an error from closer Yury Santana opened the door for a two-run Aberdeen 11th, effectively euthanizing the Cyclones 2008 playoff hopes.

Jankovic to Face Serena in the Finals
by Joe McDonald | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief | Friday, September 5, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – It almost didn’t happen this year for Jelena Jankovic. The 23 year-old actually contemplated giving up tennis temporary and going back to school. She seemed to have made the right choice. Coming back in both sets against fifth seeded Elena Dementieva, 6-4, 6-4, the Serbian was able to advance to her first finals in her short career. “The match is not over until it's over, said Jankovic, who will face Serena Williams tomorrow night, weather permitting. “Until the end you are out there competing. You're playing every point.

Roddick Blows Big Opportunity
by Derek Felix | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Friday, September 5, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY- It’s not often you get a chance to redeem yourself at a place which shall soon act like a second home. That’s exactly the kind of opportunity 26 year-old Andy Roddick was presented with late in the fourth set of his men’s U.S. Open quarterfinal against Novak Djokovic at Ashe Stadium Thursday night. He had been handled easily during the first pair of sets both owned by the 21 year-old No.3 ranked Serb who apparently used some post-match Roddick comments regarding his injuries to break the best server in the sport an unheard of four times for a 6-2, 6-3 lead. Prior, he had only been broken three times all tournament.“That’s not nice, anyhow, to say in front of this crowd that I have 16 injuries and that I’m faking,” a furious Djokovic later acknowledged to Michael Barkan drawing boos once the match was over. But here was the five years older popular No.8 ranked American refusing to go down easily getting an early break and cruising 6-3 capturing the third set to get back in the match giving the New York bipartisan crowd hopes of a big comeback.

Abruzzo Lifts Clones over Hudson Valley 5-3
by Patrick Hickey, Jr. | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Friday, September 5, 2008
BROOKLYN, NY - Winning 12 of their last 15 games and finding themselves a half game ahead of Jamestown for the New York-Penn League Wild Card Spot before Thursday night's game with the Hudson Valley Renegades, the Brooklyn Cyclones were riding higher than Steppenwolf in their quest to make their third consecutive playoff appearance. With three RBI on the night, the Jordan Abruzzo-powered Clones kept their magical playoff carpet ride alive for another night, defeating Hudson Valley 5-3. “We're in good shape right now,” said Abruzzo. “We're confident and everything is coming together right now. You can see it coming.” Hudson Valley got on the board in the top of the first after a Jacob Jefferies RBI single off Brooklyn starter Chris Schwinden that scored lead-off hitter Robi Estrada and gave the Renegades an early 1-0 lead. Not looking like the same pitcher that made the NY-Penn League All-Star team a weeks ago early on, Schwinden knew he had to make a few adjustments.

Eighteen Year Old Nishikori Upsets Ferrer in Third Round
by Joe McDonald | Publisher and Editor-in-Chief | Sunday, August 31, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY – Ever since the US Open moved to Flushing Meadows 30 years ago, Louis Armstrong Stadium was a place stars were born and champions were made or eventually broken. Although the old Singer Bowl has taken a back seat to Arthur Ashe Stadium over the past decade, the venerable facility still gets its chance to shine for a match or two at each and every Open. Eighteen year-old Kei Nishikori found that out first hand yesterday when he upset fourth seeded David Ferrer in five sets, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5. “Right now I'm very happy,” a visibly tired Nishikori said after the match. “Yeah, that's the only word I can say now. And, you know, I couldn't give up the fifth set.”

Bryan Brothers Move On in Doubles
by Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Saturday, August 30, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY — On a humid night in Queens, one southpaw cranked the ball at speeds topping out at 130 miles per hour. The right-hander also cracked triple digits, using sheer power to outlast a tenacious opponent. No, the Mets haven’t found fortifications for the bullpen. The righty-lefty duo play tennis, not baseball, and advanced to third round of the U.S. Open in the men’s doubles tournament. Meet the twins, Bob and Mike Bryan, who have won five Grand Slam doubles championships together, including the U.S. Open title in 2005. It can be hard to tell the two apart, especially when the Wesley Chapel, Fla. natives are giving each other their traditional chest bump after victories. The second-seeded Bryan brothers got the chance to play on the big stage when their match was moved from a side court to Arthur Ashe Stadium. They survived a scare on the center court before outlasting Dominik Hrbaty/David Skoch, 7-6 (2), 6-1 in a twinight match Saturday.

Querrey To Face Nadal in the Next Round
by Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Saturday, August 30, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY — American men have usually been on the wrong end of upsets at the U.S. Open during the past decade. But Sam Querrey at least temporarily reversed that trend when the Thousand Oaks, CA native knocked off No. 14 Ivo Karlovic, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2, at Louis Armstrong Stadium Saturday afternoon. Querrey advanced to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. As a reward, the 20-year-old earned the right to face the top ranked player on the planet in No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who has already won the French Open and Wimbledon and is trying to end his season with a third major this year. Querrey set goals for himself when the year started. Before September starts, he already needs to raise the bar.

Venus Easily Moves Into Fourth Round
by Brian Bohl | Senior Writer - NY Sports Day | Saturday, August 30, 2008
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY - Snippets of the song “Venus” blared through the Arthur Ashe Stadium sound system early Saturday afternoon during a first-set changeover. The song’s lyrics were sitting, since Venus Williams smoked her first serves to cruise past Alona Bondarenko, 6-2, 6-1, on center court. The seventh-ranked Williams needed just 57 minutes to beat Bondarenko and advance into the fourth round, where she play the winner of the Agineszka Radwanksa-Dominika Cibulkova matchup. Williams won all 11 of her service games, posting nine aces against just one double fault. The seven-time singles Grand Slam title-winner said those type of performances are confidence-boosters. Her post-match remarks could also put the rest of the field on notice.
